News/Updates

** As well as all major site updates being posted here, you may also find news at the
Helosim main page and the SimHQ Forums for Jane's Longbow Series **

01/12/2008 - Added a page which lists what fans would like to see if there were ever a Longbow 3 made, in which I took the entries from a recent topic I posted at the SimHQ Forums. See it here. Also, updated the 'FAQ' page with your latest questions and answers.

29/11/2008 - It has come to our attention again just lately, that there are pirated torrents of LB2 on the internet. However, perhaps unlike before, there are now links to files on PositiveG's site like for the various fixes and tweaks needed to run LB2 on modern systems. I have also seen files from my site included in downloadable versions of LB2 in the past, with the exact same filenames as on this site. We ask you not to support this act, and if you want LB2 go and buy it like the rest of us did. It can usually be found on eBay, and even though there are normally only rather steeply-priced second-hand copies, it is still worth the money. Although technically it is not illegal for people to host torrents of LB2, as the sim has been classed as 'abandonware' for some time, it is still unethical. Note that it is illegal regarding games still supported by the developers and publishers. Please support the devs/pubs by buying their games, not downloading them.

"There was always an unwritten code with Flight Simmers, you don't pirate." -- +G

Recently, SimHQ Forum member Keithb77 bought DCS: Black Shark and gave a mini-review of how it compares to the classic LB2. He says:
"Compared with Longbow its graphically excellent, 'flies' much better and technically VERY complex but still lacking in atmosphere. Even allowing for the russian radio calls you aren't embedded in the war the way you are in Longbow. If you want to FLY a modern attack helicopter get BS, if you want to feel part of combined operations and can put up with the aged engine and all its attendant problems stick with Longbow."
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

25/11/2008 - Added the Longbow 2 Tool Shop by Hatchet to the Programs page. I personally never use this program and find it rather useless, but someone out there might want it to try out. Also I've included the registry entries for LB2 at the Setup/Tweaks page. These may help if your LB2 installation has become corrupt, I don't know. Yeah... I've been pretty busy lately!

24/11/2008 - I've been working hard at all hours just lately to try and get my latest missions to a fair degree of completion, and then I took a look at my sound mods and decided to update them. So, many updates and new material...
- Added my third mission pack which features conversions and updates of other peoples missions. Be sure to check out my updated version of Shadow's
'Desert Storm' mission. Also added my NTC Pack, which consists of my latest missions for the NTC theater, including a couple of missions based on the current events in Iraq/Afghanistan with lots of soldiers to kill. I originally planned on making RAHIM KALAY a 4- or 5-part mini-campaign, but it would have taken ages to get it right, so I decided on it just being a satisfying single mission. That and APACHE DAWN should be interesting enough. See the
Campaigns & Missions page for full details.
- Added new sound and speech mods for Longbow 2... separate new ASE warning tones, a cockpit sound mod, Half-Life sound mod and version 3 of my sound and speech mods. See the
Downloads page for more info.
- Added MissioneerPlus zipped user guide and readme to the
Programs page.
- Added a Sitemap page,
here.

22/11/2008 - Updated the 'FAQ' page and added a key to my missions on the 'Campaigns & Missions' page.

21/11/2008 - SimHQ Forum member UnderTheRadar has announced that he is to build a PC specifically for Jane's F-15, F/A-18 and Longbow 2. He will include an Intel Pentium 3 1GHz processor, 192Mb RAM, Voodoo 5 5500 graphics card, DirectX 7 and Windows 98SE. Wow, that's dedication... making an entire new system JUST for those Jane's sims. It reminds me of when I went all out to find a Voodoo card a few years back on my old PC so I could play LB2 as it was meant to be... in 3DFX! However, that was BEFORE I'd ever found a successful glide wrapper!
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

10/11/2008 - Added links to some useful non-LB2-specific programs on the 'Programs' page. Also, on November 5th (not quite in time for Halloween) I made my 666th post at the SimHQ Forums, see here!
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

05/11/2008 - After reading about how would-be Apache pilots train, I had an idea. Why not get some cardboard and strap it to your monitor so that you can't see out of the cockpit and can only see the MFDs, Upfront Display and physical analog gauges? That way, you can try out what real helicopter pilots do and fly by just the instruments. Try taking-off, flying around for a bit, then landing back at base. See how hardcore (or not) you really are!
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

04/11/2008 - A week or so ago I purchased a used copy of the official LB1 strategy guide off eBay. It arrived today. Now I have both the LB1 and LB2 official strategy guide books. They are a must-have for avid Jane's Longbow sim fans or even if you just like the real AH-64D.

03/11/2008 - Recently, the SimHQ Forums have had an overhaul and changed servers. The forums are now slightly changed in that the topics now have .html extensions instead of .php, and therefore also have different paths. There shouldn't be, but some links to the forums on this site may be broken. I have tested the immediate ones that come to mind and they're OK, but I can't be so sure about the rest. Please contact me if you find any broken links.

30/10/2008 - A few additions...
- Added a Trivia page,
here.
- Added pics of 'i-LB2' by AV8R. He echoed LB2 on his iPod Touch from PC via VNC. Funny. Pic
#1 / #2. Originally posted at SimHQ Forums.
- Added my ATTACK! (NTC) mission for LB2, which features loads of enemy soldiers who are storming your base. There are quite a few in there with MANPADS, so watch it! Thanks to Lonny007 who gave me the idea of making a mission with loads of SAM infantry in. He says "I think it adds allot more to the game with those little buggers here and there if you know what I mean..." Well, for the moment this is just a sort of test mission to whet Lonny's appetite, but look out for more SAM soldiers in my future missions! Try the mission for yourself
here.

23/10/2008 - I just took a look at my mate Fritz's site, IAMFRITZ.COM, and I see that in the Links section he has added my site link. He says: "This guy has single-handedly kept a great flight sim alive- visit his site to see the latest mods and add-ons for Jane's Longbow II". Cheers Fritz! While you're on the site, why not check out his cool military aviation clothing and merchandise and treat yourself? A very talented individual, that Fritz.

Another point of interest - the other day I checked my Longbow 2 site eXTReMe Tracker stats and I was pleasantly surprised to see that someone from a .navy.mil address had looked at my site. This is not the first time that my site has been viewed from a .mil extension. Glad to see guys from the real-life military are taking an interest, it has to be the highest honor for my site!

16/10/2008 - After someone sent me an e-mail asking if I knew where they could get their hands on the credit music for the Jane's Longbow games, I decided to put the tunes up at the Downloads page. Again, I couldn't find the actual audio files so I recorded the music myself, that's why there is a bit of noise in there. Thanks to Pablo for asking who did the credit songs and if I could give them to him. These are for you mate!

13/10/2008 - I've recently been messing around with the LB2 terrain files, looking at 1) how to re-texture the terrain, 2) how to create new height maps, 3) how to override the LOD distances and 4) the decompression aspect. Not much success has come out of it, though. I did manage to re-texture the terrain, by attempting to add a new terrain image (here) using the LBMap tool - no, it wasn't supposed to be like that! I also tried by swapping the color palettes around (here) - as you can see, it affected the helicopter too! Yeah I know, not a lot of good unless you want to be flying around in a sci-fi movie! I think I conquered the terrain LOD so that all the terrain was high detail at any visual range, but with cross-texturing side-effects seen on the NTC map (here). Talking of terrain decompression, I took a look at the NoDecomp program, and have made a tutorial for it, well, it's just the readme really, as I personally haven't tested it out. Its home is at the 'Install Guides' page, but you can view it right now by clicking here.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

11/09/2008 - Added the LB1/Gold and LB2 menu music to the Downloads page. I couldn't find the actual audio files anywhere so I recorded the music myself.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

30/08/2008 - Added scans of the LB1 and LB2 boxes, as well as the LB2 Strategy Guide book at the Screenshots page.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

31/07/2008 - Today I created my very own forums. I did it really just to say that I've got my own, and it obviously won't detract from the brilliant SimHQ Forums - it isn't intended to - but I hope some of you will find it useful once it gets a bit established. Please come along and start joining and posting! Click here to go to Flyboy's Forum.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

30/07/2008 - Added a LB2 Display Mode Comparison page where you can see the differences between the three available graphics engines... Software, Direct3D and 3DFX. Several examples are available, and some of you might be interested in this, as in the past questions have been raised as to which one is better... 'Direct3D or 3DFX'. This new section was made in mind to accompany the LB2 Display Modes page. Go here for the new page.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

28/07/2008 - On July 24th I uploaded the rest of my LBG/LB2 videos to my new YouTube channel, and have now finished linking to them on the Video page. You may also find some videos I made from Apache Air Assault and KA-52 Team Alligator on my YouTube page. This now brings my total videos uploaded to 50 - quite a little collection. Of course, none of this would have been possible if I hadn't recently upgraded to broadband - imagine uploading all these vids with 56k dial-up! I hope you enjoy them, and again, drop by, check 'em out and leave comments and rate them... and don't forget to add my YouTube to your favorites!
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

23/07/2008 - Yesterday I decided to join YouTube so I can host my videos there and any future ones that I make. I have uploaded 21 videos so far, for Comanche Gold, Longbow Gold, of course Longbow 2, and occasionally you may find some videos for other sims/games there. The Video page has now moved here and is in the process of being re-done to accommodate the new move, and will be made a lot more informative. I won't bother using thumbnail images to link the videos any more, as I will provide good descriptions and YouTube gives you thumbnails anyhow. All existing links to videos will be broken and you will no longer be able to access the actual video files directly, either to view or download. From now on, all videos will be put on YouTube.

I have also posted this news and the link under the heading 'NEW: Flyboy YouTube' at the SimHQ in the following forums:
The SimHQ Community > Screenshot and Video Gallery
Helicopters - Air Combat > General - Combat Helicopter Simulations
Helicopters - Air Combat > Jane's Longbow Series

Please check out my videos and rate and comment on them. Go
here for my collection at YouTube.

21/07/2008 - The FAQ page has been revised, updated and is now sorted into sections - hopefully people can now find their questions and answers even more easily. The About page has also been updated, giving you a bit more of an insight into who I am and what makes me tick (if you give a shit).
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

18/07/2008 -  I've just made some 'teaser' audio clips about the features in LB 1&2, in the style of a pro narrator, just for fun really, find them here. Added a guide to help you install LB2 when you get file copying errors, here. Also, some small changes to the main menu to make way for the new section.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

09/07/2008 - Added links to downloadable copies of the documentation for LB 1&2, great if you've misplaced your paper manual or reference sheets. Find the links on the Readme page.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

01/07/2008 - Today marks the 1st anniversary of my site being hosted at Helosim.com, and a lot has been added in that year. Due to the extra server space, it's been possible for me to make the site look better and host more and bigger files. Thanks go out to Pappy and Lionpride who it wouldn't of been possible without. While I'm thanking people, I feel like saying thanks also to the Cool Page team (I made and maintain this site with their program) and the FileZilla team (after trying many FTP upload programs, this one turned out the best... and it's free!)
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

29/06/2008 - I've just uploaded a load of Jane's Longbow series game files to SimHQ, ready for their new downloads section. Check back here for the link when it's up and running. We've always had a close working relationship with that site, so it's a joy to be able to help them out with content, and at the same time we get another alternative download location for all major game files. Thanks to guod for the partnership and access.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

27/06/2008 - I asked guod at the SimHQ Forums if he would make a 'Sticky' topic in the Jane's Longbow Series forum with site links to Flyboy's Longbow 2 Site (this one) and Positive G's Longbow 2 install guide. He did so, and the plan is... now newbies should go to the forum and read this topic first - which is at the top of the page on that site - and see these two website links, and, in theory, they should look at these sites before asking questions that have been asked and answered over and over. Well, hopefully. I hope that players will be able to find their answers more swiftly, and people like me and +G shouldn't get so many e-mails! The title of this topic is 'STICKY: Longbow: new members read here first!' and is described as "Essential links for Longbow n00bs".
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

20/06/2008 - A few days ago I bought Longbow 2 and the official strategy guide of a guy named 'Weevie35' who I met at the SimHQ Forums. It cost me £26, and although it's second-hand, I'm glad I've got the strategy guide as I never had it before. As you all know, I obviously already have LB2, but wanted it to go to a good home.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

19/06/2008 - Added links to my two recently-made 'feature-length' LB2 videos hosted at FileFront and links to some YouTube videos by various authors. Find them on the Video page.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

16/06/2008 - Added some more LB2 video clips, this time with sound.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

13/06/2008 - Added preview thumbnail pics to the Video page in place of text links, so you can see what video you want to view.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

04/06/2008 - I've done a bit of a system upgrade. I now have Windows XP Service Pack 2, Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.0 and Internet Explorer 7 installed, as well as getting hooked-up to broadband as of today. The speed increase is phenomenal, previously a 20Mb file, say, would take like well over an hour to download. Today I tested it and it took just a couple of minutes! I will now be able to upload site content faster, allowing me to host bigger files for you guys, should the need arise. Due to this major speed increase, I will now add my LB Gold and LB2 video clips to the Video page, which I put off before now because of the collective size of them.

01/06/2008
- Today on the SimHQ Forums I was pleasantly surprised to see that there were in fact 27 people viewing the Jane's Longbow Series forum. This is the most I have ever seen at any one point. Does this mean that there are yet more of you getting into these old, but still great sims? I took a screenshot for the records!
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

31/05/2008
- Added some screenshots of LB1 in 320x240 res (taken by me), and LBG with GoldFX patch (thanks to Reticuli and speck01) to the Screenshots page. Also moved some 'quirky' pics from this page to the Featured Picture section, and have added a new Video page where I will host clips from Longbow games in the future. Go here for the new videos page.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

22/05/2008 - I've come across a possibly fantastic yaw fix, with which I got better results than when enabling vsync in dgVoodoo. For more details go to the Setup/Tweaks page and scroll down to 'Debug info/Yaw fix'.

I have also made a bunch of free flight missions, go
here for the download and more info.

And check out the new
Skill Settings page, where you can go and find out how to make LB2 easier or even harder to play!
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

20/05/2008 - We've found the answer to running LB Gold successfully on DOSBox! Thanks to speck01 and Eugene over at the SimHQ Forums, we've finally cracked it. Before, you could only run it at lowest resolution, at minimum graphics detail... and it was still laggy. We tried and tried to tweak the game and DOSBox, but to no avail. Now, the aforementioned guys have tried it on dual core processor machines... and I have it on good authority that the game runs super-smooth at maximum settings and with no need to tweak DOSBox! So, the problem all along was that we were using computers with single core processors. So, dual core and quad core are the way forward. It's ironic that you need such a new PC to run such an old sim! Go here for extracts of the discussion on the subject, and here for my latest fully revised install guide.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

15/05/2008 - I've added a Featured Picture page where I will, every so often, put a screenshot of an amusing, interesting or freak moment that has been captured in any of the Longbow series. If you have any shots which you think would look good here, feel free to send them (see full details on the new page).
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

13/05/2008 - Added to the Downloads section, a new Longbow 2 Desktop Icon made by ~TGBrennus on deviantART. Nice work sir!
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

04/04/2008 - As suggested by AV8R, I have now updated the Campaigns & Missions page to include overall descriptions, mission names, brief mission backgrounds (where available) and any additional info. He felt that people wouldn't know what to download as there wasn't really any info to go on, so I hope this helps. Thanks AV8R!
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

03/04/2008 - My main section, Flyboy's Site, has been linked to by samovar6 on his Gunship! webpage. He says:

"Lots o' different helosim stuff. There's even pictures.
He seems like a nice enough fellow, despite the fact that he's LB2 through and through. Sometimes there's just no accounting for taste. :)"

He's only joking, really. All us rotorheads respect each others sims and the work carried out on them by third-parties. He's just pissed cuz LB2 is better than Gunship! in literally every way, especially complexity and realism. When's GS! coming out on XBOX again!? ;D
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

01/04/2008 - I was shocked to receive a PayPal donation of £30 from a very generous guy who wanted to send me a donation. He gave the reason for the payment as 'LB2 RESEARCH'. I shall not mention his name, but he knows who he is. This is my first donation at all, and what a way to start! A big thanks go out to this chap who obviously appreciates the finer things in life. Most certainly NOT an April Fool's joke. THANKS AGAIN!
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

19/03/2008 - Well, I've mastered MissioneerPlus, the LB2 mission editor, at long last. Whatsmore, I've finally got round to putting up my new batch of LB2 single missions, download here and get more info here. At the moment it's just a sample of what to expect from my future missions, but I am working on a lot more. I hope you enjoy them... but I haven't even scratched the surface with my ideas yet.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

13/02/2008 - I've signed up at eXTReMe Tracking so that I can get a web counter and see how many visitors this site gets. I've put the tracker code on the index page, as that is the root of the site and where most people should land before proceeding.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

08/02/2008 - At Wikipedia I have updated the AH-64D Longbow and Longbow 2 pages, as well as creating pages for Flash Point: Korea and Longbow Gold.
Meanwhile, Magnum over at
SimHQ has got his copy of LB2 running on his new Vista system... not without one or two problems though. He is - for the most part -  delighted, and has been reviving some of those old unforgettable memories. See his screenshots he posted here.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

05/02/2008 - I've known for a long time now that there isn't a LB2 entry at Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia. There is a page for LB1, even though that in itself is not very extensive. I thought 'This isn't right!', and nobody has bothered to make a go of it. So, I have, and anyone who's anyone knows that if it's not on Wikipedia, it's not worth knowing about! It's not much right now, but I've made the first step. I've linked to the LB2 page off of the LB1 page, and have added the main links of interest. In the future I plan to update the existing LB1 page, add a FPK and LB Gold page, and seriously add some muscle to the new LB2 one. I would like to make this a companion to my own website. Now, just need to figure out and get to grips with the Wiki format...

Go
here to see the results so far.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

21/01/2008 - My new Longbow 2 Sound Mod (v2) and Speech Mods have been added to the Downloads section. Many hours of editing and testing time have gone into these. I hope it will enhance the LB2 experience for you! Please look at the readme files provided for install instructions.

Also, I've added a LB2 starters package which makes it a bit easier for newbies to get up and running. This has a modified CA.INI with XP/Kiowa/NavMap fix, 3DFX enabled, full graphics detail; and dgVoodoo 1.50 with optimum graphics settings and framerate limiter enabled. See the
Setup/Tweaks section for the download and instructions. Just copy these files and you're ready for lift off!
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

18/01/2008 - No names mentioned, but I have recently helped someone getting LB2 to run on a modern system, who wanted to use this incredible sim as a training aid. Why? Because they are in the IAF (Israeli Air Force) flight course and are destined for attack helicopters! How cool is that?

10/12/2007 - Flyboy's Longbow 2 Site has been officially online a year!
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

22/11/2007 - I took a look on the SimHQ Forums today, and I was very pleased to see in the Article Feedback section that my SimHQ Longbow Series article has been viewed 500 times and 30 replies have been posted!
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

20/11/2007 - I've added a LB2 Multiplayer overview by AV8R of the 1st Calvary LB2 Online Squad. This would have been part of my SimHQ Jane's Longbow Series article, but it didn't make the deadline. View it here
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

13/11/2007 - Ten years ago today, the finest combat helicopter sim of the next decade was released... Jane's Longbow 2. Grab your anniversary wallpapers and fun pack here! Also, don't forget to read my article, which also marks ten years of this golden sim. View here or at SimHQ here. Happy 10th Anniversary Longbow 2!

11/11/2007 - I took a look at the Article Feedback section on the SimHQ Forums and I couldn't believe the loads of postive feedback that I got for my LB2 article. I was quite frankly overwhelmed. Thanks for all the nice comments people, I'm glad you all read and enjoyed the article. I was also pleased to see that it made some old fans pick up LB2 and install and have a go at it once again. Cheers!

04/11/2007 - The SimHQ Jane's Longbow Series article has been previewed and verified by myself, confirmation has been sent to guod for the go-ahead to post it up, and it has since been put up. I had uploaded my version of the article a couple of weeks ago, but I didn't want to publish the link until the SimHQ version was up and running.

Many hours and over 5200 words later, I have included everything suggested by guod, plus have taken into account of what the fans in the SimHQ Longbow forum wanted, and what I thought was necessary. As a result, we have hindsight reviews and history of all the games in the series - not just LB1 and LB2, but the FPK add-on, LB Gold and LB Anthology - including detail on all each games' features and important points. Screenshots, quotes from fans, a big section on what has been done to mod the game and the future of it. Also, a simplified guide to getting the game to run on modern systems and with links to the websites needed for extra info. Thanks to all people involved, listed too. Hope this is what you hoped for... and more!

Finally, here it is ladies and gentlemen, rookies and aces! View it
here (on SimHQ) or here (on this site)

28/10/2007 - I've tidied up the site and have given it a new look. I liked the old style, but I have been wanting to do an MFD layout for quite some time... I just never got round to doing it... until now! I changed the index page to a sort of 'welcome' screen, and the main site page with the list of contents in is now beyond that. I left all the other pages in the old-style format. Hope you like!
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

27/09/2007 - Added my LB2 strategy guide, which can be found in the new Strategy Guides section, or here. A few alterations have also been done, in general.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

02/07/2007 - The most popular pages on this site so far are: Campaigns & Missions (253), Fixes (72), Links (199), Patches (94), Programs (735), Setup/Tweaks (447), and Screenshots (620)
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

01/07/2007 - Loads of news! First off, LB2 and Air Head sites initially uploaded to new location @ Helosim.com (here and here), this means much more space to play with, a more flight-simmy-sounding web address and no more annoying ads! Secondly, I have created a new site called 'Flyboy's Shotz' (here). Here you will find screenshots from other helicopter sims aside from LB2, and maybe even screens of plane/tank/soldier sims too! And last but not least, some minor updates to this site! Wow, what a day! And remember, this is all for your benefit... so enjoy!
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

09/04/2007 - I have added a Saitek X52 Pro joystick profile in the Setup/Tweaks section, or you can grab it directly here. Thanks to SwedeX for that.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

07/04/2007 - New layout, designed to give easier access to site content.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

22/03/2007 - I've just had a look for the Longbow series on Amazon.com and look at what's available and the prices!

07/02/2007 - I have added the LB2 TrackIR files and instructions in the Setup/Tweaks section, or you can grab them directly here. Thanks go out to TheSilkMan who provided the files and instructions.
Please DO NOT mail me asking about problems on this matter... I have never used TrackIR and therefore cannot help in any way. Sorry.

03/02/2007 - Check out my new 'Air Head' section here. It will mainly consist of articles, info and photos on real-world military helicopters and related stuff... with the U.S. systems being in favor. You may also find, however, input on military planes, land combat... and in fact all aspects of anything remotely BFG (you figure it)-related!
